"To the Moon and Back" is a song by Australian pop duo Cruel Garden. It was released in Australia on four Nov 1996 every bit the second single from their self-titled 1997 album. Information technology was the follow upwards to their hitting "I Want Y'all". Information technology won the 1997 ARIA Music Award for Song of the Twelvemonth. The song became a top-three hit on the Great britain Singles Nautical chart, and a top-25 hit on the US Billboard Hot 100, and was besides the band'due south start number ane in their native country.[2] [3]
Background [edit]
In an interview with Apple Music nigh their debut anthology, singer Darren Hayes explained the origins of the song.
"I was a big science fiction fan - I loved Blade Runner. I wrote information technology from that indicate of view, or the thought of what it means to be human being. That idea of yearning to express your emotions and your feelings and for that to exist legitimized. There was also someone in my life whose persona was very standoffish and who pushed everyone who loved her away. Merely I could see underneath that hard beat out, there was and so much pain and all that stuff that I identified with - mum never loved her much, daddy never kept in touch on, these are things really bothering this person."[iv]
Release and nautical chart performances [edit]
Later on the international success of their debut single, "I Want You", there were high expectations for the vocal every bit its follow-up. During the vocal'due south start charting in the US after its release there in July 1997, the song entered the peak forty of the Hot 100 for simply one week, peaking at number 37 the final week of August 1997. In the Uk, the unmarried was originally released in September 1997, and there it failed to chart in the height xl, stalling at number 55 for one week.
Later, "Truly Madly Securely" became an even bigger hitting than their debut, striking the number one spot in several countries, including both the Hot 100 and the Hot Adult Contemporary charts in the United States, where it bankrupt the tape as the longest-running single to that time on the Adult Contemporary charts. While the song did non initially experience success in the US, the success of "Truly Madly Securely" inspired Roughshod Garden and Columbia Records to remix "To the Moon and Dorsum" in 1998 and release information technology again.
In the wake of such success, the band decided the song had greater potential to become a striking than its showtime chartings had borne out, and and then instead of mining a fourth single from the anthology every bit they had for the Australian marketplace, they decided to mix a shorter edit of "To the Moon and Dorsum" and re-release information technology internationally in 1998. This time the song peaked at number 24 in America, an improvement upon its beginning release yet even so not the blast they had hoped it would be.
In the Great britain, however, their faith was rewarded when the song debuted at number iii, condign Savage Garden'due south biggest hit in the country. This prompted the re-release of their debut single, remixed every bit "I Want You '98". The unmarried was certified Argent in French republic in 1998, and sold 209,000.[5]
Disquisitional reception [edit]
Larry Flick from Billboard wrote, "The follow-upward to the platinum-selling "I Want Yous" should keep the momentum of this charming Australian duo building quite nicely. Wisely, this runway doesn't attempt to mimic the quirky, about novelty-driven sound of its predecessor. Instead, information technology affirms partners Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones' talent for crafting immediately catchy hooks and solid, sing-along choruses. Once again, the music warmly revisits the new-romantic sound of the '80s with its melodramatic alloy of satiny synths and jittery guitars."[6]
Music videos [edit]
There accept been three different music videos for the vocal. The outset, accompanying the Australian release of the vocal, was directed by Catherine Caines and Chris Bentley, and was shot in black and white. This version features Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones performing on what appears to be a space vessel, whilst a female rider watches. A version of the video accompanied past a dance remix of the rails was also released.[vii]
The 2d, accompanying the The states and original United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland release of the song, was directed by Nigel Dick, and features Darren and Daniel performing in an apartment in Malibu whilst a female records the functioning. It was filmed between Apr 17 and eighteen, 1997.[8] This American video features Hayes with long hair.[nine]
The third version was filmed in New York, and features a pitiful-looking teenage girl traveling by the metro to run into her friends (manifestly other misfits like herself). This video features Hayes with brusque pilus, and is the nigh well-known of the 3 versions.
